The iPhone 4S includes Siri, the new voice-activated assistant feature.  One security hazard, however, is that Siri is usable even when the phone is locked, thus defeating the purpose of the security of the passcode lock in the first place.  Out of the box, Siri is active even when the phone is locked.  Thus, anyone can simply grab your locked phone and issue voice commands.

To deactivate Siri while the phone is locked, follow these steps:

  • Tap Settings then scroll down to General.
  • From General, scroll down to and tap Passcode Lock:
  • If your passcode is active, enter it on the next screen.
  • To prevent Siri from operating while your phone is locked, flip the Siri switch to off

By now, you may have seen videos about or at least heard about the security flaw found with the iPad2.  We have confirmed that it is true and demonstrable.  However, there is one important factor to bear in mind.

Once a locked iPad is unlocked through the magnet trick, remember that only the foreground application will be usable.

This means that if you were using Safari before locking the iPad, only Safari will be usable.  An unauthorized user who breaks into your iPad through this magnet trick will only be able to use Safari.  Switching applications with finger swipes, or minimizing it with the 4-finger pinch (if using iOS5) will not work.

Therefore, to ensure security of sensitive information like your e-mail, always close applications completely before locking your iPad.  Returning to the home screen just means that your application is still running in the background.  To fully close the application:

  1. Press the Home button twice to reveal all running apps.
  2. Hold your finger on any of the apps, and they will begin to shiver while displaying the red X red “minus” in the corner.
  3. Tap the red X red “minus” to close the application.

This is the same process as deleting an application from the home screen, but only closes an app rather than deleting it.
